Focused Gamma Module
When drilling horizontally through a thin zone it is necessary to determine formation dips to maximize well productivity. Phoenix’s Focused Gamma Module is a shield designed to fit outside the pressure barrel and partially block gamma rays from reaching the detecting crystal. This creates a 180° window of investigation that can be oriented to any toolface to determine gamma readings. The data from various toolface orientations can then be used for geological interpretation, which allows directional decisions to steer the well within the desired zone, avoiding the formation dips.
Currently in testing, when the Focused Gamma Module is utilized gamma readings can differ by up to 80%, indicating that source directional changes in the gamma counts will identify formation differences. In projects, such as CBM, more efficient and precise navigation can be achieved through the application of the Focused Gamma Module.
